Sauerburg

Sauerburg, 65391 Sauerthal

Sauerberg Castle, which lies in a picturesque and isolated site by Sauerthal, stands out above all thanks to its handsome, 32-metre bergfried and high dividing wall with timber frame top.
The estate lies on an entry path from the Rheinsteig trail and is therefore of special interest for hikers.

Count Palatine Ruprecht I. of the Palatinate received permission from the Archbishop of Mainz in 1355 to build one of the strongest border fortresses in today's World Heritage Site. The Sauerburg, picturesque and secluded near Sauerthal, is particularly notable for its impressive keep, rising 32 meters high, and its tall separating wall with timber framing on top. Despite the extensions and the historicizing expansion from the early 20th century, the facility has a remarkable historical preservation substance. Thus, it conveys an authentic image of a strong late medieval to early modern castle.
The estate is located along a side path of the Rheinsteig and is therefore especially interesting for hikers.

Since 2021, various private events and booked group tours have brought life to the castle. Additionally, overnight stays are possible in vacation apartments within the castle.
